Feature: Young at heart.
Issue three of parkrun magazine found out more about junior parkrun, the Sunday morning 2k event dedicated to young people aged 4-14 and their families.
The magazine team visited two junior events and spoke to walkers, joggers, runners, volunteers and parents and parkrun’s global head of health and wellbeing, Chrissie Wellington OBE, told the story of how junior parkrun began (and how it has evolved to where it is today, where around 17,000 young people join in every Sunday).
Stay strong.
If someone says “strength training” to you, do you picture muscly gym types? Actually, strength training is important for all of us, no matter our age or shape. Having a go at strength training can boost overall health and make day-to-day tasks easier to complete. We asked a pair of personal trainers to put together a set of moves that anyone can try.
Community.
Of course, the magazine was packed with real stories from parkrun events and the communities around them. We visited Victoria Park in Leicester, and also found out more about Bryn Bach parkrun and junior parkrun in beautiful south Wales.
Don’t throw it out!
In light of the ongoing cost of living crisis, we share some tips, hints and recipes about leftover food, creating healthy meals to make the contents of our cupboards and fridges go further.
The inside story.
Did you know that parkrun events also take place on the custodial estate? We were granted special access to a few parkrun events in UK prisons, finding out more about the vital role parkrun can play in improving health and wellbeing among prisoners, as well as preparing them for life on the outside.
